What is left out, and why
- At least 3 of the seven methods must answer. One method alone is coincidence, not convergence.
- And those methods must come from at least 2 different families. Four of the seven read the same earnings per share, so three of them agreeing can be one number counted three times — if that year’s profit carried a one-off gain, all three are wrong together and in the same direction, which is exactly what the spread test cannot catch.
- The four families cannot disagree by more than 3× among themselves — when they do, one of them read an outlier and the average means nothing. The test is between families, not between the seven formulas: Graham is deliberately conservative and routinely lands far from the others, which is what averaging within a family is for.
- Market cap of $2B or more, price of $5.00 or more. Below that, the price reflects illiquidity and survival risk, which none of the formulas measures.
- Discounts above 70% are excluded. At that size it is almost always earnings about to collapse, not a mispriced stock — without the cut, this list would be led by companies in trouble.
